Faith Boucha
About Edmonton
Faith loved living on reserve, and found great value in the community supports and cultural ties that were available to her there. However, she felt that the city would offer her more work opportunity to build savings for her and her daughter, Neveah.
So, eight months ago, Faith and Neveah moved to Edmonton. A friend of a friend offered to have them stay in his home for the first 2 months of transition, but at the end of the first month, Faith hadn't found work. With Neveah sleeping soundly while the homeowners were there, Faith took the opportunity to head to a local pub for a drink and some reflection. There, a man named Rob approached her, flirted, and offered to pay Faith for sex. She had never had any interactions like this before, but she felt desperate for money and hope, and agreed to his offer.
Over the next month, she and Rob had many meet-ups, and it helped Faith pay for groceries and some new clothes for her growing daughter. It wasn't what she had in mind in moving to the city, but Faith was proud, and wanted to make a life for her family in whatever way she could.
At the end of the second month, she still hadn't found a job, and Rob saw the opportunity to get Faith all to himself whenever he wanted. So, he offered for Faith and Neveah to move in with him. She thought: he had treated her well enough—no violence, he'd kept his word—and she had no other options. Faith and Neveah moved in.
For a while, it went okay. Then, the violence started. Rob lost his temper quickly and often, taking it out on her using words, fists, and household objects. Afraid, she tried to say no to his sexual advances, but he told her, "I own you. You have to do what I say." If she tried to leave or refuse him, he said he would hurt Neveah, too.
