About the Peer Support Program

ACT is the only organization in the province that provides peer support specific to survivors of human trafficking.

What is peer support?
Peer Support is a supportive relationship between individuals who share similar lived experiences. For survivors of human trafficking, Peer Support provides a safe, non-judgmental space where they can connect with others who understand their journey.

It is based on mutual respect, shared understanding, and empowerment.

Benefits of peer support

  • Shared Understanding: Connects survivors with others who "get it," reducing isolation.

  • Empowerment: Encourages self-determination and reinforces personal strengths.

  • Hope & Healing: Seeing others in recovery can inspire hope and resilience.

  • Practical Guidance: Peers offer real-world coping strategies and resources.

“Thank you, ACT Alberta, for making space for my voice and for standing alongside survivors in ways that go beyond words. Your work doesn’t just help individuals — it challenges the very systems that allow exploitation to persist. I’m grateful to be part of a community that believes in safety, dignity, and change — both real and auroral, as beautiful and shifting as the northern lights.”

“There were moments when I truly felt seen and heard by the organization, and I’m so grateful for everything they’ve done for me. My journey has been a profound experience, and if I could share one thing with others going through something similar, it would be this: Be strong and be resilient.”
