Odesa Pado
About the Calik Family
Odesa always dreamed of a better future—one where she made enough money to support her family and provide the things they needed to live comfortably. After hearing about Canada's Live-In Caregiver Program, a recruiter helped her match with a family, and she made her way overseas. She knew she'd work hard, but be compensated enough that she could send money back to the Philippines to help her family.
Odesa's role was to support Samantha, the Calik family's teenage daughter living with diagnoses that affected her speech, movement, and development. Samantha was joyful, non-verbal, and liked Odesa. Although the work required patience, it was a fairly good fit.
Recently, Mrs. Calik's aging parents moved into the home, and Odesa was told she would also have to care for them. Even worse, Samantha was affected by the change in routine and started to display aggressive and out-of-character behaviours, turning Odesa's life upside down.
Rather than a usual 12-hour workday, Odesa was now needed round the clock, helping Samantha with bad dreams and helping the grandparents make their way safely to the washroom when they woke in the night. She had always had Sundays as a much-needed day off, but the Calik family said they needed her too much for that now.
