Taarush Thakur

About PT Pizza

Taarush's ambition was always a driving force in his life. More than wanting a specific career, he wanted a lifestyle that he felt unable to achieve in India. Growing up watching Western television and movies, Taarush aspired to come to North America. He looked into immigration pathways and was connected with an immigration consultant.

Taarush paid the necessary bills to be considered for the program and the ensuing travel costs of coming to Canada. He was promised a living wage, 40 hours of work per week, and the boss would arrange for the provided accommodation.

When he arrived, Taarush's life began to spin. His work hours doubled what was promised while his pay halved. The living accommodations were dismal. Rather than a proper home, he was living in a converted garage at the back of someone's property. The owners frequently entered his locked space with their keys and took food items or harassed him. Taarush's commute to work was nearly an hour each way by transit, and he shared his space with mice and bed bugs.

The boss also informed Taarush that he would be expected to reimburse the Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) costs: $10,000. He had depleted his savings and was earning so little that he didn't know if he'd ever be able to save $10,000. His dreams of building a good life in Canada seemed impossible until a coworker whistleblew and Taarush was given the chance to talk to an officer.
